Upper Body Lift
An upper body lift is often recommended for patients experiencing a “dropped out” lateral inframammary crease after significant weight loss. This procedure combines brachioplasty (arm lift), upper-back resection, and breast reconstruction to restore a more balanced silhouette.
It’s not just about the physical transformation—an upper body lift can also enhance self-confidence by giving you a smoother, more contoured appearance.

Candidates
In order to undergo an upper body lift, you must be in good physical health. The following are some common reasons why you may want to consider an upper body lift:
- You have undergone bariatric surgery or significant weight loss through dieting.
- Liposuction of fat in your upper body has resulted in loose skin that needs to be removed.
- You have loose skin under your arms, by your armpits, on your breasts and rolls on your back.
- The layers of fat below your loose skin are relatively thin.
- Your weight has been stable for at least three to six months, with no further weight loss expected.
- You are in overall good health without chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease. A clearance for plastic surgery from doctors treating you for medical conditions.
Pre-operative
- Get a lab test or a medical evaluation
- Take certain medications or adjust your current medications.
- Stop smoking.
- Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements and other medications that may increase bleeding.
Procedure
Patients undergoing an upper body lift will typically be placed under general anesthesia. The specific experience varies depending on the chosen procedures, which can include:
- Upper arm lift
- Breast lift
- Back lift
Depending on your goals, you can opt for an arm lift, breast lift, fat removal along the back, or a combination of these. If targeting fat rolls on the lower, middle, or upper back, incisions will be made on both sides of the mid-back, often near the bra line for women. Excess skin will be removed, and the incisions closed in layers. For the back lift, the incision will be placed across the mid-back and positioned to be hidden by a bra or bathing suit strap.
Post-op Care
During your body lift surgery recovery, dressings or bandages will be applied to the incisions after the procedure is complete. Small, thin tubes may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood that may collect.
Recovery
Recovery from an upper body lift typically takes several weeks. Swelling, bruising, and discomfort are common in the initial days. Patients should avoid strenuous activity for about 4–6 weeks, but light movement is encouraged to promote healing. Compression garments may be needed, and most return to normal routines within 6–8 weeks.
Complications
Possible body lift surgery risks include:
- Anesthesia risks
- Asymmetries
- Fatty tissue under the skin might die (fat necrosis)
- Fluid accumulation
- Numbness or other changes in skin sensation
- Pain, which may persist
- Persistent swelling in the legs
- Poor wound healing, Unfavorable scarring
- Possible need for revisionary surgery
- Recurrent looseness of skin
- Skin discoloration and/or prolonged swelling

Maintaining proper skin health and hydration can help the skin retain its elasticity to some extent. However, it’s important to note that the skin’s elasticity has limits, and massive weight loss may lead to loose skin. In such cases, surgical intervention may be necessary to remove the excess skin and achieve a more contoured appearance.
In cases of minimal weight loss, the skin may contract on its own. However, in cases of massive weight loss, loose skin may not contract enough and you may be left with large amounts of hanging skin. There is no treatment that will tighten your skin like a lift and tuck will.
The upper body lift is not intended for those looking to lose weight. In fact, you should be at your ideal weight before having an upper body lift, as weight loss and weight gain can affect your results.
