Belt Lipectomy

“Curves look best in the right places!” After significant weight loss, many are surprised by sagging skin, particularly around the waistline. This happens when skin loses elasticity and can’t return to its original form, leaving it wrinkled.

Belt lipectomy, a 360-degree surgery, offers both aesthetic and health benefits. Besides reshaping the torso, it addresses skin infections, rashes, and hygiene issues caused by excess skin and fat. Ideal for those wanting to restore their confidence, this procedure does leave a thin scar around the bikini line, but many find it worth the boost in self-esteem.

Pre-operative

Belt lipectomy is a major surgery, only performed when the patient is in good health. That’s why it’s crucial to discuss your complete medical history and undergo all necessary tests before the procedure.

Weight fluctuations can affect your results, so maintaining a stable weight is key. Avoid medications like blood thinners before surgery, and be sure to follow your surgeon’s pre-op instructions carefully to ensure the best outcome.

Procedure

Belt lipectomy begins with general anesthesia, followed by the surgeon making the first incision. During the procedure, the patient is repositioned about three times. After removing excess skin and fat from the lower back, the surgeon makes another incision along the lower abdomen. This removes excess tissue, often resembling an “apron” of skin.

Once the fat is removed, the remaining tissues are repositioned, which also improves the contour of the outer thighs, giving the procedure its name, “lower body lift.” The incisions are then closed with stitches to complete the surgery.

Post-op Care

Belt lipectomy is a procedure that needs comparatively more care as the abdominal muscles are active even while one is sitting. Every instruction given by the surgeon about movements have to be followed minimum for 4 to 6 weeks until the pain subsides and the wound begins to heal.

Doctor has to be approached immediately in case of fever, heavy bleeding and/or severe draining, or if wound starts to smell and/or appear red.

Recovery

Wearing snug fitting garments helps to reduce swelling around the wound. Proper care must be taken in order to recover quickly. Bandages have to be changed timely, drains have to managed, getting proper rest and eating healthy is important, any activity or action that requires bending, lifting or submersion in water must be avoided.

Complications

  • Problems with wound healing, skin loss, unfavorable scarring.
  • Blood clots in leg also known as deep vein thrombosis.
  • Nerve damage.
  • Fatty tissue under the skin might die (fat necrosis)
  • Fluid accumulation.
  • Numbness or other changes in skin sensation.
  • Persistent pain & swelling in the legs.
  • Possible need for revisionary surgery.
  • Recurrent looseness of skin.
  • Sutures may spontaneously surface through the skin, become visible or produce irritation and require removal.
  • Results attained post surgery might disappear if the weight is gained again.
