Browlift

A brow lift, or forehead lift, is a surgical procedure for both men and women that elevates the forehead and reshapes the brows. When done for cosmetic reasons, it aims to restore a youthful, refreshed look to the area above the eyes. For reconstructive or functional purposes, it repairs and repositions a drooping brow, which may result from facial paralysis or aging effects.

In some cases, a temporary brow lift can be achieved with neurotoxins, such as Botox. Neurotoxins can be injected into the muscles that pull the eyebrows downward, thus weakening their effect. This technique can be performed in the office by Dr. Sameer and has little to no downtime. Results of non-surgical brow lifts typically last 3-4 months.

Procedure

Candidates

A good candidate for a forehead lift has one or more of the following:

  • Deep furrows between the eyes
  • Horizontal wrinkles on the forehead
  • Sagging brows
  • Tissue that hangs down at the outer part of the eyelids
  • Problem seeing because of the hanging tissue

Pre-operative

  • You need to undergo lab tests or a medical evaluation.
  • Take specific medications or adjust your current ones.
  • Stop smoking.
  • Avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements, as they can increase bleeding and bruising.

You must arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from the surgery and stay with you the first night following the procedure.

Procedure

All brow lifts are performed under GA or LA with sedation
Pre-trichial (Trichophytic or Hairline) Brow Lift : This technique is commonly performed in individuals with higher hairlines. A surgical incision is placed just ahead of the hairline along the length of the forehead. The forehead skin is then lifted through this incision and secured at the desired height.

Lateral/Temporal Brow Lift : The outer one-third portion of the eyebrows are the first to descend and droop as we age, thus creating heaviness to the upper eyelids. This technique is a less extensive brow lift technique that only lifts this droopy outer portion of the eyebrows. With this technique, short surgical incisions are placed within the hairline, through which the outer portion of the brows are lifted and contoured.

Internal (Trans-blepharoplasty) Browpexy : This technique also addresses the outer portion of a droopy eyebrow. It is performed in conjunction with an upper eyelid blepharoplasty and takes advantage of a standard eyelid incision. Through the same incision, the eyebrows can be secured into a higher position with sutures.

Post-op Care

As with any surgical procedure, you will likely experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising in the upper portion of your face and around your eyes, which can be alleviated with cold compresses and pain medication.
Keeping your head elevated as you recover, will help to reduce bruising and swelling as well. Any stitches or sutures may remain in place for approximately 4 – 7 days.

Recovery

It is important that you avoid strenuous activity such as heavy lifting or exercise for at least 2-3 weeks following the procedure to allow your body sufficient time to heal.
Recovery typically takes 2-3 weeks, with many patients returning to work after two weeks. Scars usually become unnoticeable once they have matured. Surgeons generally ensure that scars follow natural skin creases or are hidden by hair, making them less visible.

Complications

  • Hematoma that may need to be drained surgically
  • Damage to the nerves that control muscles of the face (this is usually temporary, but may be permanent)
  • Wound healing issues with excessive scarring
  • Persistent pain
  • Hairloss over the scar
  • Asymmetry of the eyebrow.
  • Numbness or other changes in skin sensation

Yes. A low-set brow can cause you to appear angry and fatigued. A brow lift will raise your eyebrows to help you look more alert and positive.

No, a brow lift does not eliminate deep wrinkles between the brows. For a temporary improvement lasting 3 to 6 months, Botox is very effective. For those seeking a more permanent solution, laser resurfacing, microneedling, and fat grafting can provide significant improvement.

Yes, you can opt for a browpexy, where the brow is raised through an upper eyelid incision, leaving no scars on the forehead or scalp. This procedure can be performed simultaneously with an upper lid blepharoplasty and is popular among both bald men and women with hair loss.

As we age, the outer edge of the eyebrow tends to descend more than the inner area near the center of the face. Raising the inner brow too high can create a startled look. Dr. Sameer addresses this by performing a temporal brow lift, which elevates the outer two-thirds of the brows. This technique ensures a gentle, aesthetically pleasing arch without an unnatural appearance.
