Breast Reduction

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess breast fat, glandular tissue, and skin to achieve a breast size more proportional to your body. For those tired of carrying the literal weight of the world on their chest, this surgery can alleviate discomfort, back pain, and posture issues, while boosting confidence. Whether your neck is screaming for relief or you just want to feel lighter, breast reduction offers a solution. It’s not just about aesthetics—it’s about comfort, function, and embracing a size that feels right for you. Plus, you get the bonus of finally being able to find a bra that fits *and* looks cute! Post-surgery, many patients report improved quality of life, increased physical activity, and a reduction in pesky neck and shoulder pain.

Must Know

Candidates

The best candidates for breast reduction are individuals who experience physical discomfort due to large breasts, such as chronic back, neck, or shoulder pain. People dealing with skin irritation under the breasts or indentations from bra straps are also ideal candidates. Those who feel self-conscious or limited in their daily activities—like exercising, finding clothing that fits, or sleeping comfortably—may benefit from the procedure too.

Additionally, candidates should be in good overall health, with realistic expectations, and be at a stable weight. If you’re tired of constantly adjusting your bra straps or dreaming of a life free from shoulder dents, you might be a great fit for breast reduction. Just make sure you’re done growing, both physically and in terms of family planning.

Pre-operative

Have a physical examination, including lab work

  • Obtain breast imaging studies depending on your personal or family history or age
  • Take certain medications or adjust your current medications
    • Obtain breast imaging studies depending on your personal or family history or age
  • Stop smoking or vaping*
  • Avoid taking aspirin and certain anti-inflammatory drugs, as they can increase bleeding

Procedure

The procedure is done under general anaesthesia. Incision options include a keyhole incision for smaller breasts, a lollipop scar (the commonest) or an inverted T shaped scar (for huge breasts)

Once the incision is made, the nipple, which stays connected to its original blood and nerve supply, is repositioned. If needed, the areola’s size is reduced by removing skin from around its edge. Excess breast tissue is removed, and the remaining tissue is lifted and reshaped.

For individuals with very large breasts, the nipple and areola might need to be completely removed and repositioned higher on the breast—a technique called a free nipple graft. In this case, the nipple and areola will lose sensation after surgery, and the healing process may take longer.

The incisions are brought together to reshape the now smaller breast. Sutures are layered deep within the breast tissue to create and support the newly shaped breasts. Sutures, skin adhesives and/or surgical tape close the skin. Incision lines are permanent, but in most cases they will fade over time.

Post-op Care

After surgery, your incisions will be covered with gauze or bandages. You’ll likely wear an elastic bandage or support bra to help reduce swelling and provide support for your newly shaped breasts. In some cases, a small, thin tube may be placed under your skin to drain excess fluid or blood.

We will provide detailed instructions on how to care for the surgical site, any medications to apply or take to promote healing and prevent infection, signs of complications to watch for, and when to schedule your follow-up appointment.

Recovery

Week 1

  • Monitor pain, swelling and bruising (medication may be required)
  • Significantly limit your activity

Weeks 2-3

  • You will start to feel much better
  • Return to work (depending on your job)
  • Limit exercise and activities

Weeks 4-5

  • Continue to wear a support bra
  • Increase activity
  • Continue to be gentle with your breasts

Week 6 and Beyond

  • Continue to perform breast self-examination
  • Schedule routine mammograms
  • Discuss scar optimization and resumption of normal activity with your surgeon

Following your physician’s instructions is key to the success of your surgery. It’s important that the surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, swelling, abrasion or motion during the time of healing. Your doctor will give you specific instructions on how to care for yourself.

Complications

  • Bleeding (hematoma)
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Breast contour and shape irregularities
  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation, which may be temporary or permanent
  • Excessive firmness of the breast
  • Fat necrosis (fatty tissue deep in the skin could die)
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Pain, which may persist
  • Poor wound healing
  • Possibility of revisional surgery
  • Potential inability to breastfeed
  • Potential loss of skin/tissue of breast where incisions meet each other
  • Potential, partial or total loss of nipple and areola
  • Skin discoloration, permanent pigmentation changes, swelling and bruising
