Breast Lift
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is all about giving your breasts a fresh, youthful boost by removing extra skin and tightening the surrounding tissue. It also helps if your areolas have stretched over time—those get a little lift too!
This procedure can restore a perkier, more youthful breast profile. Breasts naturally change as you age, lose firmness, or stretch due to things like pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight changes, aging, gravity, or even genetics.
What a breast lift won’t do? It won’t dramatically change the size of your breasts or add fullness to the top. Some women may want to consider placement of a breast implant in addition to the breast lift.An implant can provide improved upper breast fullness or cleavage.
If you want smaller breasts, a breast lift with reduction could be your go-to option.

Must Know
Candidates
You may be a candidate for breast lift surgery if:
- You are bothered by the feeling that your breasts sag or have lost shape and volume
- Your breasts have a flatter, elongated shape or are pendulous
- When unsupported, your nipples fall below the breast crease
- Your nipples and areolas point downward
- You have stretched skin and enlarged areolas
- One breast is lower than the other
Pre-operative
- Get lab testing or a medical evaluation
- Take certain medications or adjust your current medications
- Get a baseline mammogram before surgery and another one after surgery to help detect any future changes in your breast tissue
- Stop smoking
- Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs and herbal supplements as they can increase bleeding
Procedure
Your breast lift can be done using different incision patterns and techniques, tailored to your needs. The best approach for you depends on factors like:
- Your breast size and shape
- The size and placement of your areolas
- How much sagging you have
- Your skin quality, elasticity, and how much excess skin is present
There are three common incision patterns:
Around the areola
Around the areola and vertically down from the areola to the breast crease
Around the areola, vertically down from the breast crease and horizontally along the breast crease
Once the incisions are made:
- The breast tissue is lifted and reshaped for improved contour and firmness.
- The nipple and areola are repositioned to a more youthful height.
- If needed, excess skin around enlarged areolas is removed.
- Any excess breast skin is also taken out to address lost elasticity.
After reshaping and skin removal, the remaining skin is tightened as the incisions are closed. Sutures are placed deep within the breast tissue for support, while the skin is closed using sutures, skin adhesives, or surgical tape.
Post-op Care
After your breast lift, dressings or bandages will cover the incisions. You’ll need to wear an elastic bandage or support bra to reduce swelling and support your healing breasts. A small tube might also be placed under the skin to drain any excess fluid.
You’ll receive specific instructions on:
- Caring for your breasts post-surgery
- Medications to help with healing and prevent infection
- Signs to watch for at the surgical site or related to your health
- Scheduling your follow-up appointment with Dr. Sameer.
Recovery
You’ll see the results of your breast lift surgery right away, but as post-surgical swelling goes down, the final look will become clearer, and incision lines will gradually fade.
As you recover, your satisfaction with your new appearance should grow. It may take a few months for your breast shape and position to fully settle, and while incision lines are permanent, they will continue to lighten over time.
Your breast lift results are designed to last, but keep in mind that factors like aging and gravity can still affect your breasts. To maintain your new look for longer, focus on:
- Keeping your weight stable
- Leading a healthy lifestyle
Complications
Breast lift risks include:
- Anesthesia risks
- Bleeding or hematoma formation
- Breast asymmetry
- Breast contour and shape irregularities
- Changes in nipple or breast sensation, which may be temporary or permanent
- Fatty tissue found deep in the skin might die (fat necrosis)
- Fluid accumulation
- Poor healing of incisions
- Possibility of revisional surgery
- Potential partial or total loss of nipple and areola

While breast lift surgery offers long-lasting results, it is not considered permanent due to factors like ageing, gravity, weight fluctuations, and hormonal changes that can affect the breasts over time. The surgery effectively resets the position of the breasts, but it does not halt the natural ageing process. Maintaining a stable weight and a healthy lifestyle can help prolong the results. However, some patients may choose to undergo a secondary lift years later to address further sagging.
A breast lift can indeed help correct asymmetry in breasts. Many women have some degree of natural asymmetry. During a breast lift, Dr Sameer can adjust the position of the nipples and areolas, reshape the breast tissue, and remove excess skin to create a more balanced and symmetrical appearance.
Dr. Sameer often suggests waiting until after having children and breastfeeding since these experiences can greatly impact the size and shape of the breasts, potentially changing the surgery results. Changes that occur in the breasts during pregnancy can minimize or reverse the improvement a breast lift provides. Likewise, significant weight loss after breast surgery can negatively impact breast appearance.
There isn’t a set age for getting a breast lift, but it’s generally recommended for those with fully developed breasts, which typically occurs in the late teens or early twenties. Emotional maturity and realistic expectations about the outcomes are essential for patients.
A breast lift may potentially affect your ability to breastfeed, although many women are able to breastfeed after the procedure. The surgery involves repositioning the nipple and areola and may involve cutting around these areas, which can sometimes impact milk ducts and nerves. If breastfeeding is a significant concern, it’s important to discuss this with Dr Sameer before the procedure.
