Neck Lift
A neck lift, or lower rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure designed to improve visible signs of aging in the jawline and neck. A neck lift can address:
- Excess fat and skin relaxation in the lower face, creating jowls
- Excess fatty deposits under the chin
- Loose neck skin
- Muscle banding in the neck, causing abnormal contours
Some people may want to improve the aging appearance of their neck with a Non surgical neck lift. Some of the benefits of these nonsurgical options include a quicker recovery time and fewer risks.

Procedure

Loss of youthful contours in the face and neck can result from heredity, gravity, environmental conditions, and stress.Some people feel they are not ready for a full facelift because their upper face is still pleasing. However, many patients notice excess wrinkling of the neck skin, a double chin or “turkey wattle,” and jowl lines.
When the neck area does not match the appearance of the upper face, a neck lift may be an ideal solution.
Pre-operative

- You need to undergo lab tests or a medical evaluation.
- Take specific medications or adjust your current ones.
- Stop smoking.
- Avoid aspirin, anti-inflammatory drugs, and herbal supplements, as they can increase bleeding and bruising.
You must arrange for a friend or family member to drive you to and from the surgery and stay with you the first night following the procedure.
Procedure
During a neck lift procedure, medications such as intravenous sedation or general anesthesia are used to ensure your comfort. Depending on your goals, you can choose between a traditional neck lift or a limited incision neck lift. The traditional approach involves an incision starting in the hairline at the sideburn, continuing around the ear, and ending in the posterior hair. This method allows for sculpting fat, repositioning underlying tissues, and tightening the platysma muscle. Excess skin is then trimmed. A separate incision under the chin may be needed for liposuction and muscle repair. Limited incision neck lifts use shorter incisions around the ear, with results that may be less extensive. Incisions are closed with sutures or skin glue, which are well concealed once healed.
Post-op care
Following completion of a necklift, a bandage might be placed around your neck to minimize swelling and bruising. Small tubes / drains may be present to draw off any excess blood or fluid.
You will be given specific instructions on how to care for the surgical site and drains, medications to apply or take orally, specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health and when to follow up with your plastic surgeon.
Recovery
- Recovery following a necklift surgery takes about 1-2 weeks. The drains are removed 48 hours & the sutures come off by the 7th day.You will need to wear a pressure garment for 3weeks following the surgery. It takes about 2-3 weeks for the swelling and the bruises to subside during which the prescribed meds and creams help. Make sure to follow all instructions carefully.

You should always sleep on your back with your head elevated on a couple of pillows to avoid stress on the incision sites.
