Breast Implant Revision
The goal of breast implant revision surgery is to replace old implants with new ones while improving the breasts’ appearance. Over time, implants can change in size or shape, and breast tissue may also shift, leading to a less desirable look or feel. This may involve:
- Performing a breast lift or reduction at the same time
- Adjusting the implant pocket to improve positioning on the chest
- Changing the size, shape, or style of the implants, whether increasing or decreasing
This procedure isn’t routine and should be customized to each patient’s goals. It’s essential to choose a board-certified plastic surgeon experienced in breast surgeries to ensure the best outcome.

The desire to have breast implant revision surgery can be because of any of the following reasons:

Procedure
The incision type for breast implant revision surgery depends on the specific procedures being done.
Breast revision surgery often involves multiple procedures. For example, a breast reduction revision might include a lift to reshape and reposition the tissue for optimal results. In cases of firm breasts or capsular contracture, scar tissue is removed, and implants may be replaced if desired. Surgeons aim to use existing scars for incisions to minimize new scarring and enhance the final outcome. Once the surgery is complete, the incisions are closed using sutures, skin adhesives or tapes.
Post op Care
Following your breast implant revision, gauze dressings or bandages maybe applied to your incisions. Depending on the details of your surgery, you may or may not be placed in a support bra or other type of garment.
In some cases, a small, thin tube may be temporarily placed under the skin to drain any excess blood or fluid that may collect.
It is important that the surgical incisions are not subjected to excessive force, abrasion or motion during the time of healing.
Recovery
The final results of breast implant revision surgery will be hidden by swelling at first, which usually takes about six weeks to subside. It may take 6-12 months for the breasts to feel soft and natural again.
Healing varies for everyone, and it can take time for the breasts to soften, sensation to return, scars to fade, and for the patient to adjust to the new implants. It’s important to discuss realistic expectations with your surgeon.
Surgery isn’t an exact science, and while good results are expected, another procedure may sometimes be necessary to achieve the desired outcome.
Complications
The possible risks of breast implant revision surgery include, but are not limited to:
- Bleeding / Haematoma
- Fatty tissue found deep in the skin might die (fat necrosis)
